Giving Tuesday 2021
Its Giving Tuesday
Join the Legacy Makers and Support the Richard Kemp Center on This Giving Tuesday!
The COVID Pandemic and a racial reckoning have laid bare the devastating historic impact of systemic racism on Black folks in the United States and here in Vermont. We know that the Black and Brown people languish with higher rates of poverty, lower incomes and dramatically lower median wealth. It is evident that they are also consistently underserved in the areas of housing, education, health services and even the justice system. Many policy makers and community members have asked what actions they can take to address systemic racism. This is one way. This is an opportunity to support the work of a Black-led organization doing unprecedented work to meet the needs of our community members where they have been generationally underserved. This work, as envisioned in Operation Phoenix R.I.S.E. last year will be centered in our culture and focused on our wellness.
Our vision includes a community partnership that includes a Community Center, a Youth Activity Center and Art and Science Centers of Excellence. Priorities will include wellness, youth, cultural, and economic development. Programming currently under consideration includes Wellness Support, Adult Basic Education, Basic Computer Skills Training, People and Workforce Development, Financial, Home and Land Ownership Education, Entrepreneurial Cultivation Programs, Technical Assistance, Grant Assistance and Youth Programming (including mentoring and tutoring, STEM Development, Arts and Sports). Located central to those it serves, the Richard Kemp Center will serve as a bastion of hope, purpose and vision for the Black community.
Though COVID concerns continue to delay the launch, planning continues on the full rollout of the Cultural Empowerment Center, located at 372 N Winooski Ave, in Burlington. We’re proud to designate this long awaited initiative in honor of Richard Kemp, a Black community social justice hero. This initiative will invest in systems that address Black and Brown folks’ wellness; support our youth; enable economic advancement and provide space for cultural celebrations and commemorations, moving us towards greater racial and social equity, wealth distribution, health and prosperity. We need your help to make it happen. Please donate generously this Giving Tuesday. We all do better when we all do better!
